Imagine the Scene
The underground club is a maze of darkened rooms and corridors and swarming crowds. The floor fills as a dark and menacing tribal track thunders out over the PA system, and a time-lapse video of a gathering storm looms on the huge screen suspended above.

The Video Disc Jockey (VDJ) is in control
The crowd shouts out for more as the audio mix intensifies. A sample from a 70s disco anthem breaks into the deeply rhythmic track without warning, looping in perfect time to the thumping bass line. The stark contrast between the two audio tracks is reinforced by the images on screen…the rain clouds disappear and return. The dancers' steps are synchronized to a double in the audio, in a teasing take-off of the disco moves from that earlier decade. The club-goers love it, electrified by the dynamics of the mix of sound and vision. The deep bass pounds out more insistently, as lightning flashes emerge from the clouds. Soon, these arcs of light are interspersed with a repeated image of fireworks in the sky, four explosions to every four-beat bar. The crowd has been taken from one of nature's own light shows to an example of the man-made vision.

As the audio continues, the VDJ mixes and beat-matches some home-video footage into the visuals. A pretty girl flutters her eyes provocatively, a windsurfer zips across the surface of a lake and a beautiful girl shakes water droplets from her hair. The pattern repeats for a few bars until the images are reversed… and then reversed again. The movement gets faster and faster as the backwards-forwards motion reflects the increasing speed of the audio. But now, the loop of the disco-hit is blending into the vocal hook of another floor-filler, and this new track begins to dominate. The crowd is on the edge, waiting to erupt. They raise their arms to acknowledge the correct club favorite and the air is flooded with hands. Suddenly, the home-movie has gone and a huge sun is dazzling the crowd from the screen. The chorus of the track rings out, loud and clear. There's a roar of approval. Nobody on the floor has ever felt such an intense feeling in a club before: the awe-inspiring combination of
sound and vision.
